Miss Cochlan and Primary 6C

Here at 6c we have been making highland crofts out of clay. Crofts are small cottages which were made from stone and  packed with earth and straw to cement them together. The roof was made of straw, we call this a thatched roof. These crofts made up a community. A word for a community like this is called a TOUN. Inside their crofts they had only two rooms. In the middle of the two rooms was a fire with  stones around it to stop the fire from spreading. above the fire they had a black pot hanging from a chain to cook their food on. In one room they had their cattle so they could not be stolen. Also in that one room they also had their beds. In the other room they had a dresser against one wall and a small wooden table and chairs to eat at.

Boy do we have some great chess players in this school; least of all Carl Milton who took part in a North East Junior Chess Tournament on Saturday at Stonehaven Town Hall. Carl was lucky enough to win second place equal but then was ‘demoted’ to third place because they didn’t have enough trophies for two second places! Anyway, he still got a trophy, although a little smaller than the one he should have got but most of all he still triumphed in our eyes. Good going Carl!

Aimee Begg has something to celebrate too. She recently passed her drama exam with a distinction! She had to recite two poems using her very best expression, which she obviously did very well, as she passed with glowing colours. Well done Aimee!

We’ve made a good start on our new project, The Jacobites. We think it is a very good and interesting project because it can take you back to the 1600/1700s.  We have learned quite a lot already. We have learned about the Stuart Family tree. We have had a very special visitor in class, Connor Colquhoun! A real Jacobite! ( Who suspiciously looked like Ms Cochlan) dressed in a tartan plaid, a tartan bonnet, a targe but with a moustache. We asked (him) lots of questions about the Jacobites and life back then. Did you know that some people used to live in small cottage type house called Crofts. In a Croft, there was a fire in the middle of the room, the roof was made of straw and had a hole in the middle of the roof for the smoke to go out of. The Crofts were sometimes called Black Houses because of all the black soot that came from the fires and because they hardly had any light because they had very small windows. Today we started making our own Crofts from clay. We planned how they would look first and which materials we would need to make the roof. Some people have decided to use straw, twigs. moss or dried grass.

Happy New Year everyone! Our enterprise activity(selling stamps) went very well last year. We raised an Amazing amount of money. We raised one hundred and fourty four pounds and five pence!

We’ve started on our new project. This term it is the Jacobites. Some of the interesting active learning activities that we will be doing are…  

• Making targes (Jacobite shields.) 
• Designing and weaving our own tartans.
• Making black houses from modroc.
• Doing another one of Ms Cochlan’s challenges: designing and building bridges and carts.
• Also (if we have time) we will be experimenting with vegetable dyes!

       We hope you all had super holidays, and enjoy 2008!

We have all been really excited lately because it is coming up to Christmas.

 We have had 2 visitors lately, both parents, to come into class and they talked to us about what they do to help the Environment. Mr Patterson (Holly’s dad) came in and has happy to talk about his very Eco-Friendly house in Culter. It was very interesting because we got to see what it was like living in a Zero Heating House. Holly, one of our School class mates was a bit embarrassed at first because Mr Patterson was her Dad! But she soon got over that when even she learned a lot from his talk. Thanks Mr Patterson!  It was a really good talk and we all hope to see him again in a few years time and see if he has improved  their house even more. He’s got a lot of ideas on how to have an even more eco-friendly house.

Ms Arif (Lea’s mum) came in to talk to us about her oil technology business. She supplies oil companies with plastic parts for their drilling.  She told us how she reclaims and recycles her products by breaking them down in to chips before shipping them off to China for free, to be made into chairs, furniture and doors etc. It was very nice to have her in with us and we learned a lot too. Thank you Ms Arif!

We all achieve everyday in one way or another but from time to time, someone will do something extra special that we want to shout about. On Monday the 10th of December, we performed at the school concert. We sang Christmas songs. The little ones performed a little play called the Disgruntled Snowman! They had ace costumes. Most of them were made by Mrs Forbes. We sang 5 different songs. We have nearly finished our Eco houses! They look very bonny (hopefully the pics will come soon. We’re still learning how to put them on our blog page). They contain energy saving lightbulbs, compost bins, wind turbines, loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and double glazing windows/doors! THEY ARE SOOO COOL!!! And we learned a lot about how to save energy.

On Wednesday 12th of December, we are having our x-mas party in school. We get to come to school in casual/party clothes. At the party, we will be playing a lot of different gamesincluding musical statues, corners, dancing competition, musical chairs and lots more!

Recently we have been really busy practicing for our Christmas concert. In between times ,we have been working hard on our energy project.We have been doing lots of things to do with energy, like

• Making electrical circuits.
• Expermenting with light reflections.
• Creating shadow puppets and putting on short plays.
• Save our world poems.
• Abstract energy paintings.
• And we saved the best till last…model eco-houses.    

 We worked in groups to plan what our houses would look like and which energy saving features we could include.   

       We re-used old cardboard boxes which we painted and decorated to make our eco-friendly houses and we think they look great!!! You”ll find them soon on our eco-news page . Keep your eyes peeled!!!
